Desi Lounge
Since 2005, Desi Lounge has been dishing up delectable Indian delights to the curry-lovers of Manchester, in a slick, contemporary setting. Plush, navy blue seats and tables are accented by sleek chrome and tasteful spot lighting, making this something more special than your usual curry house. Enthusiastic chef/owner Shokat Ali and his team pride themselves on their North Indian inspired menu, which specializes in freshly prepared, authentic ingredients. Most regulars can’t resist The Desi Lounge special – a slow cooked chicken dish in a spicy yoghurt based masala sauce cooked with cashew nuts and fried onions. A Punjabi Lamb Haandi comes in a close second.

Lal Qila
Lal Qila is on Rusholme’s Curry Mile along Wilmslow Road (Manchester’s answer to Brick Lane). It’s a large, relatively upmarket restaurant over two floors. The food is best described as Pakistani. Because everything is made to order, your dish can be as spicy or unspicy as you like it - a flexibility much appreciated by the locals, judging by the half Asian, half White British crowd filling the floor. Chef’s specials like the chicken chilli, lamb methi and chicken handi are very popular, as well as his ‘sizzler’ dishes. You’ll find all your traditional curry house favourites too, and accompanying Indian beers. Service is swift from the start when complimentary poppadoms are brought to your table. And the five-sauce chutney try is just 30p a person.

Zaika Indian Restaurant
Zaika lays claim to being Manchester’s finest Indian restaurant, and though we haven’t sampled nearly enough of the countless curry houses in the city to confirm it, we’ll admit it’s a pretty safe bet. You see, Zaika not only offers an excellent menu of contemporary Indian dishes living up to the restaurant’s name – Zaika translates as ‘the sense of taste’ – both prepared and presented with style and care, but it boasts wonderful surroundings too. Set within the long neglected Great Northern warehouse, now a vibrant entertainment centre complete with casino, cinema, shops and gym, Zaika is beautifully modern and bright with a chic, urban feel especially out on the patio 0overlooking Great Northern Square.
